Formed in 1980 as NK Joinery Ltd by Les Nicol Snr, NK Construction Ltd began life as a carpentry and joinery business.
In 1980, the company moved into construction in a modest way to begin with, mostly building small extensions. As the business grew, we took on larger projects and renovation work, for which we became relatively well know and gradually developed into a medium sized construction company.
During the 35 years our company has been operating, we have steadily grown, allowing us to provide first class quality in any aspect of construction and to carry out many of the various elements required in the Building Industry. We have operated in various markets from Private to Public as well as Government residential contracts, completing works from the installation of a uPVC window, to a large 4 storey office building.
Over the years, we have successfully completed many Government new build works. These being the Palatine GP Surgery, a new Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre within the Hospital grounds and a new GP Surgery at Peel as well as a new changing block at the NSC.
We have undertaken many refurbishment works for various Town Commissioners such as Douglas, Ramsey, Onchan and Peel.
We have also completed many private works. In 2011 we built an office block in Ramsey for a private client. More recently we constructed a 4 storey office block on South Quay in Douglas and refurbished office blocks on both Prospect Hill and Hill Street, Douglas.
Being one of the first if not the first construction company on the Isle of Man to achieve both ISO 9001:2008 and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 sets a very high standard for both quality and Health and Safety and we utilise this to set ourselves apart from our competitors. By achieving these awards we are striving towards being the best within the construction industry. Although we do not currently hold these accreditations, we continue to adopt the criteria as best practice for all our works. Our financial director is a qualified Auditor for this.
A uPVC division was formed in 2002 and still operates now, installing high quality uPVC windows, doors, fascia, soffits, bargeboards and rainwater goods as well as Composite doors. All of these products have been successfully installed for a wide range of clients including Public, Commercial and Government.
We have achieved numerous awards within the industry as well as recognition from members of the industry and members of the Isle of Man Government, especially through our Managing Director’s involvement with the Isle of Man Employers Federation as Immediate Past President and current Vice President. We were also finalists in both the 2012 and 2013 Isle of Man Newspaper Awards for Excellence Company of the Year category, an achievement which means so much to our company.
At present we have 34 directly employed personnel, including a Finance Director, 2 Quantity Surveyors, 1 Contracts Director, 4 no. Site Managers, various foremen, tradesmen, skilled labourers, labourers and office admin staff.
We have often been referred to as the “oldest, youngest construction company on the island”. We have always been recognised since the 1980’s however the distinct growth over the last 12+ years has brought the name of NK Joinery Ltd initially and subsequently NK Construction Ltd more and more into the public eye.
Today, this family run business is a construction company that can accommodate any type of building project for private or commercial clients. The company is now run by Les Senior’s son, Managing Director Les Nicol Jnr, who joined as an apprentice joiner in 1982. While Les Nicol Snr still plays an active roll as a Site Manager, with the Financial Director being Les’ brother Alan, the Company Secretary being his wife Lindsey and Colin Vance the Projects Director, who is a Brother-in-law. To further complement this, Les’ son Danny has now joined the office team as a Trainee QS.
Although we have been growing the business steadily, we are still committed to remain sufficiently small to continue offering a personal service, a service that has served us well for 35 years.
The company is a member of the following
The Isle of Man Employers Federation (our Managing Director Mr. Les Nicol, is the Immediate Past President and current Vice President of the federation).
MACCS – the Manx Accredited Construction Contractors Scheme
